About | Biography

James (“Jim”) has been interested in sketching and painting since before he can remember. Many of his childhood hours were spent exploring outdoors in woodlands, fields, and salt marshes and fishing with his older brother, father and grandfather in the Hudson Valley and Chesapeake Bay areas as well as the coast of southern Maine. These experiences had strong influence on his artwork.

James recently spent two years living in northern Japan and is currently a research associate at the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve in southern Maine. His experience includes investigating fish communities and habitats from the Gulf of Maine estuaries and their associated watersheds to offshore marine areas. He has created a large collection of illustrations based on fishes and habitats of the Gulf of Maine. His illustrations reflect his direct exposure, aquired through intense field research, to these habitats and the fish that live there. Many of these illustrations have been provided for numerous documents and publication for Gulf of Maine-related research, education and stewardship.

James lives in Alfred, Maine with his wife Junko. James was born on June 16, 1976 in Poughkeepsie, New York. He studied Natural Resources and Marine Science at the University of Maine, Orono.
